Overview

PenangLang Kopitiam Bukit Mertajam stands out as a welcoming Chinese restaurant deeply rooted in Penang’s culinary heritage. Nestled within the bustling district of Pusat Perniagaan Gemilang at 19, Jln Perniagaan Gemilang 1, this kopitiam offers an authentic taste of Penang’s traditional flavors, especially celebrated for its iconic Hokkien Mee.

The restaurant’s signature dish, the Penang Hokkien Mee, draws praise for its rich, prawn-infused broth that delivers the ‘Ko Chabi’ essence beloved by locals and visitors alike. Its robust umami profile caters to diners who appreciate flavors that command attention rather than mild seasoning. Complementing this are delights like the Jawa Mee, a tomato-based noodle that presents a thicker broth, though opinions vary on its intensity.

Beyond noodles, the menu showcases traditional Malaysian breakfast items such as Nasi Lemak—the nation’s beloved coconut rice dish—alongside Ice Kacang, a refreshing dessert with mixed toppings like kidney beans and grass jelly but notably light on sweetness. The Rendang Chicken and crispy Fried Prawn Cake also capture the balance between texture and flavor, with fresh ingredients and house-made chili sauces elevating each bite.

The dining space itself offers a cozy, air-conditioned environment with a warm ambiance ideal for families and larger groups. Its clean, modern décor paired with efficient, responsive service enhances the overall experience, although parking can be limited during peak hours. The restaurant’s ordering system is fully cashless, utilizing QR codes for a streamlined yet occasionally cumbersome process that management might refine further.

PenangLang Kopitiam embraces a target audience that values authentic Penangese cuisine served in a communal setting. It is well-suited for those seeking a hearty meal infused with traditional flavors, particularly seafood lovers and fans of full-bodied broths. The non-halal menu includes pork offerings, reflecting the culinary diversity of Malaysian Chinese food.

In sum, PenangLang Kopitiam Bukit Mertajam offers a genuine, flavorful journey into Penang’s food culture. Its strengths lie in its signature Hokkien Mee, friendly staff, and inviting atmosphere, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone exploring Bukit Mertajam’s rich food scene.

Staff were friendly. You can order and pay straight at the counter. We had Fried Prawn Cake. It was crispy and not oily at all. Generous amount of small prawn make it to be crispy.Topped with their chilli sauce is highly recommended. We also had Hokkien Prawn Mee. It was flavourful where you can taste msg spreading on your tastebuds once u had the broth. You will like it if you like prawn powder soup. Not recommend to those who prefer light taste. The prices of their foods is acceptable (for their portion).

This restaurant is located in a busy area especially during lunch time. The restaurant is clean and cool. The ordering system, like others have commented, is annoying. The management needs to look into it. As for the food, it depends on what you order. The Hokkien mee is very good. The broth is just right. The herbal chicken soup is excellent. The broth is tasty and thick. The chicken drumstick is also big. The Java mee is not that good. The broth is a bit too thick on the tomato. The prawn shells on the prawn fritters was a bit annoying. The ais kacang lacked sweetness. They included kidney beans, attap seeds, grass jelly, and maize but no peanuts.
